Louis 20 Armchair by Philippe Starck
The name
This very collectible and now out of production chair is named in the fashion of naming royalties. However, the use of Arabic numerals in keeping with modern times also indicates that there were many designs leading up to this one.
The design
Philippe Stark’s creation is an example of postmodern furniture design. It combines two staples of modernist design: tubular metal and plastic. The result is a very practical (and stackable) chair. It’s light and made out of recycled plastic. But most importantly, it has a very eeiry sence of human presense, as the plasic parts form a silhouette of a sitting person. This chair is a part of MoMA’s permanent collection.
